Manchester United's unplanned £23m decision means Ruben Amorim might face transfer wait

It might turn out to be £23million well spent, but Manchester United's decision to change manager has been another costly episode for a club that has become a loss-making enterprise in recent years.

United's latest accounts posted a loss for the fifth successive year, this time of £113.2m. That took the cumulative losses for that five-year period to more than £370m, and the last three years have seen the club lose £257m.

United did manage to pass the three-year profit and sustainability monitoring period written into the Premier League's rules, allowing losses of £105m from 2021 to 2023, but that required some creative accounting when it came to the allowable deductions.

The challenge for Sir Jim Ratcliffe is to turn this club into one that starts to make money again, so shelling out such a substantial sum to change the manager isn't ideal.
