United parked plans to move for Trippier in the January transfer window after he was suspended for breaching betting regulations but are now considering a formal bid.
Trippier, 30, is out of contract at Atletico next year and is understood to have made arrangements to permanently return to England.
The Bury-born full-back’s family still resides in Manchester and Trippier, who hails from a United-supporting family, would relish playing for his boyhood club.
