Ralf Rangnick says competition for places denied Donny van de Beek more playing time for Manchester United this season. Van de Beek started 19 times in 17 chastening months for the club before he was allowed to join Everton on loan for the remainder of the campaign on deadline day.
The 24-year-old was United's headline arrival in the summer of 2020 but Van de Beek has not started in the Premier League since May and lined up four times this season before he moved to Merseyside.
Van de Beek's only start in Rangnick's 10 matches in charge was in the Champions League group stage dead-rubber against Young Boys.
Rangnick has trailled several formations but Scott McTominay has started in every domestic match he has been available to the German and Fred has benefited from Rangnick's arrival, scoring the winner against Crystal Palace and creating goals against Aston Villa in the FA Cup and Brentford in the Premier League.
