Steven Gerrard

Steven George Gerrard MBE (born 30 May 1980) is an English professional football manager and former player who manages Scottish Premiership club Rangers.

He spent the majority of his playing career as a central midfielder for Liverpool, with most of that time spent as club captain, as well as captaining the England national team. Widely regarded as one of the greatest midfielders of all time,

Gerrard was awarded the UEFA Club Footballer of the Year award in 2005, and the Ballon d'Or Bronze Award. In 2009, Zinedine Zidane and Pelé said that they considered Gerrard to be the best footballer in the world.

English football saw more controversy over VAR as Aston Villa saw an equalising goal ruled out at Old Trafford for offside.

A free-kick on the right saw John McGinn whip a ball in, with Danny Ings bundling home after a header from Ezri Consa. Steven Gerrard's side thought they'd bagged an equaliser against Manchester United in the FA Cup tie, only for referee Michael Oliver to be called to review it.

Following the VAR review the official gave an offside, with fans at home baffled by what appeared to be a hairsbreadth call on Ings.In fact though, the video review had disallowed the goal for an entirely separate offence, and one which was far more clear cut.Under the IFAB rules, a player can be judged offside when not interfering with play if they are interfering with an opponent.For that to be the case, one of the following must apply.preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent’s line of visionchallenging an opponent for the ballclearly attempting to play a ball which is close when this action impacts on an opponentmaking an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ballWhen McGinn played the ball in, Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey was very clearly offside.While the 20-year-old was not challenging for the ball or attempting to play it, he clearly blocked a run by Edinson Cavani.Given that he blocked Cavani as the ball came in, that would fall under impacting the ability of an opponent to play the ball.The officials ruled that by getting in the way of the Uruguayan striker, the Villa man had impacted the set piece which led to the goal.It's clear that Oliver disallowed the goal for that action, as an indirect free-kick was
