A dedicated couple from Manchester has walked the West Highland Way for their local hospice. Barrie and Claire Hawker, who now live in Poynton, travelled on the incredible journey along the West Highland Way in Scotland, comprising a 96-mile walk which they completed in just eight days.

Through their fundraising journey, and the support of friends and family, Barrie and Claire raised over £1,200 for St Ann’s Hospice, a charity important to the couple.

Living close to the St Ann’s Hospice Heald Green site, Barrie drives past the site every week, and Claire also sings in the local choir - which has supported the Hospice as their Charity of the Year in 2023 - and the pair were inspired to increase fundraising through a physically enduring challenge.

Barrie said: “This was definitely the most challenging walk we’ve ever done, although the big mountains that surrounded us did make for beautiful scenery as we walked. “We’ve never done a big walk in Scotland before, so we wanted to go somewhere different and thought why not conquer Scotland!” The walk consisted of Barrie and Claire starting their journey from Milngavie, outside of Glasgow, to Fort William.
