Manchester Arndale market remains closed after fire at food stall

Manchester Arndale market remains closed today (Saturday) following a fire which resulted in the evacuation of the shopping centre.

Firefighters were called to Arndale at about 4pm on Friday after a blaze broke on one of the food stalls in the south side of the market hall.

Hundreds of shoppers were asked to leave the Arndale while firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze. The mall reopened after about 90 minutes, but the market remained closed.

On Saturday morning Coun Pat Karney, Manchester council's city centre spokesperson, gave an update on the fire. He posted on X, formerly Twitter: "Following the fire on one of the food stalls last night which led to a evacuation of the centre the market is closed today to allow further investigations and clean up.
