Man fighting for his life in hospital after 'head-on' smash on main road

A man is fighting for his life in hospital after a 'head-on' crash between two cars in Rochdale. Police, paramedics and fire crews raced to the scene of the smash on Wildhouse Lane, close to Hollingworth Lake, at around 7.45pm last night (Sunday).

Police said a Nissan Micra, which was travelling northbound on the road, collided with a BMW One Series heading in the opposite direction.

The Nissan driver - a male - was rushed to hospital from the scene. He remains there in a life-threatening condition, a Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said. READ NEXT: Talbot Road incident: Police on scene with cordon in place The driver and a passenger in the BMW suffered minor injuries.

The fire service initially said last night that one of the drivers was a woman, but a police spokesperson this morning (Monday) confirmed both drivers were male.
