Spain boss Luis de la Fuente also risked a public row with Guardiola by insisting he would put his country ahead of City's wishes by starting Rodri against Switzerland regardless of his fitness.

As it happened, Rodri survived his first appearance of the season, and he will return to City like a new signing having taken time to return to action following a summer injury.
