Man charged in police drone probe at Strangeways prison

A man has been charged in connection with an investigation into contraband being smuggled into HMP Manchester. Police in GMP's City of Manchester North Challenger team launched an investigation into 'offences relating to drone incursions' at the prison, known commonly as Strangeways, in September this year. 'Several parcels' were seized by officers as part of the planned operation at the category A and B men's jail.

Mohammed Sharif, from Birmingham, has now been charged in connection with the probe. The 21-year-old has been charged with two counts of attempting to convey Article A into prison. Sharif has been remanded into custody. He was due to appear at Manchester and Salford Magistrates' Court today (November 28).

A GMP spokesperson said: "These charges are a result of an investigation by officers from the City of Manchester North Challenger team into offences relating to drone incursions at HMP Manchester from September 2024 where several parcels were seized following a planned operation."
