Montreal is on the brink of becoming Canada's first city to embrace a 24-hour nightlife scene, following in the footsteps of global hotspots like Berlin and Tokyo.
The city plans to establish an 'all-night' district where venues can operate throughout the night. The BBC reports that city officials anticipate this move could generate "hundreds of millions" of dollars in extra revenue for Montreal.
Under the new scheme, hospitality venues will be permitted to stay open into the wee hours and continue serving alcohol. At present, Montreal's bars and clubs are required to shut their doors by 3am, while Toronto's nightlife ends at 2am and Vancouver's at 3am.
Ericka Aleus, the city councillor championing the initiative for round-the-clock nightlife, told the BBC: "This is an opportunity for economic growth.
