Ethan Shanfeld Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan bring Leonard Bernstein and Felicia Montealegre to life in the first official trailer for “Maestro,” premiering in limited theaters on Nov.

22 and arriving on Netflix Dec. 20. In the trailer, Cooper and Mulligan travel through time as the couple experiences love, betrayal and music.

The movie encompasses Bernstein’s professional life but glosses over his commercial achievements in favor of focusing on his complicated relationship with Montealegre. “If summer doesn’t sing in you then nothing sings in you,” Cooper says at the beginning of the trailer as an old man, gently playing the piano.

Later on in the trailer, but depicting the young couple decades before, Mulligan finishes the sentence: “And if nothing sings in you, then you can’t make music.” As the trailer sweeps through the years, and in and out of color, Cooper portrays the legendary American conductor and composer as he plays music in stuffy attics and towering cathedrals.
