Without any major releases on the calendar, Sony’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home” — yes, a movie that debuted in December of 2021 — managed to return to the No. 1 spot in North America. Sony re-released the film with 11 minutes of extra footage that proved to be tantalizing to comic book fans, bringing in $6 million from 3,935 theaters over the weekend. “No Way Home” is expected to finish the Labor Day holiday weekend on Monday with $7.6 million. Another holdover, Paramount’s “Top Gun: Maverick,” is trailing ever-so-slightly with $5.5 million between Friday and Sunday and an estimated $7 million through Monday. Since ticket sales are close, the final order could change on Monday. In any case, the triumph of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “Top Gun: Maverick” highlights the bleakness at the box office considering both of those films are widely available on home entertainment.

At first glance, then, one might wonder what drew him out of hibernation for a film that, with its trim runtime and small-scale domestic narrative, belies a title that translates as “immensity.” This 1970s-set story of a 12-year-old navigating his gender identity while his mother battles mental health demons is too palpably pained and heartfelt to be called slight, but it’s sensitive and peculiar in ways that feel fragile — occasionally splintered and swamped by an elaborate setpiece, or the outsize star magnetism of arguably its secondary lead, one Penélope Cruz.

Thanks to heavily discounted tickets, an estimated 8.1 million moviegoers attended their local multiplex to purchase tickets for just $3, making Sept. 3 the highest-attended day of the year for theaters, according to the National Association of Theater Owners. In an effort to populate multiplexes during the dog days of summer, more than 3,000 theaters across the country, including major chains like AMC and Regal, were charging just $3 for admission to any movie in any format — far less expensive than the country’s average ticket price.

Mad Max: Fury Road spin-off Furiosa has been suspended in Sydney after director George Miller tested positive for COVID, according to reports.Starring Anya Taylor-Joy as the titular character following Charlize Theron, Furiosa is a prequel to 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road which will focus on the character’s origins.According to The Daily Mail Australia, filming on Furiosa has been suspended until at least August 15 after Miller tested positive for COVID earlier this week.
