Setien was sacked by Barcelona in the summer following a poor season in which Real Madrid won La Liga and the Catalan giants were thumped 8-2 by Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
Messi and co. were at odds with Setien over the course of the season, with the Argentine unhappy with the 61-year-old's tactics.
Barcelona drew 2-2 with Celta Vigo in June, which saw Real Madrid pull ahead of them in the title race, and subsequently win a first title since 2017.
