He rose to fame as a member of the boy band One Direction.
Payne made his debut as a singer when he auditioned for the British television series The X Factor in 2008. After being eliminated as a solo performer, he auditioned again in 2010 and was put into a group with four other contestants to form One Direction

Fans were devastated this week when news broke the singer died at just 31 years old on Wednesday. It was even worse when they learned he jumped from the fourth-story balcony of his room at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The act — one of intentional self-harm or not, we still don’t know — shocked the world. But as we previously reported, a 911 call placed by the hotel’s chief receptionist revealed staff members were concerned about Liam’s safety because, they said, he had “too many drugs and alcohol” and was acting erratically.
Witnesses even told TMZ he smashed his own laptop at one point and had to be carried back to his room — which he trashed.
