Health officials have expressed concerns over a new variant of Covid-19, which is said to be spreading faster than any other strain identified during the pandemic.The First Minister said that 17 cases of the variant have been recorded in Scotland so far - but that figure is likely to be an “understatement” of its true prevalence in the country.Government officials said that they were left with no choice but to approve the harshest of restrictions for much of the country from 00.01am on Boxing Day.
