The last picture of Sir Michael Parkinson shows him in great spirits, just months before his death.The veteran broadcaster died aged 88 on 16 August, with his devastated family announcing the news in a statement.

He was seen in May at Hay Festival in Wales where he signed copies of his book, My Sporting Life. Sir Michael smiled and greeted people warmly whilst dressed in a white shirt and checked blazer.

A statement from Sir Michael's family said: "After a brief illness Sir Michael Parkinson passed away peacefully at home last night in the company of his family. "The family request that they are given privacy and time to grieve." The chat show host interviewed some of Hollywood’s biggest names throughout his illustrious career – with names such as Jimmy Cagney, Fred Astaire, Lauren Bacall and Ingrid Bergmann on the list.Tributes have poured in for Sir Michael as the entertainment world loses another legend.

BBC director general Tim Davie described Sir Michael as "truly one of a kind, an incredible broadcaster and journalist who will be hugely missed". "Michael was the king of the chat show and he defined the format for all the presenters and shows that followed," Davie said. "He interviewed the biggest stars of the 20th Century and did so in a way that enthralled the public.
