There were scenes of chaos in Manchester city centre this afternoon as hundreds of school kids ran riot. Scores of teenagers descended on the Market Street and Piccadilly Gardens after finishing school for the summer.
But what should have been a cause for joyous celebration soon turned sour as police officers were pelted with eggs and milkshake.
As youths in school uniforms ran amok in Piccadilly Gardens, shops were forced to lock their doors and tram services were brought to a crawl.
A tactical aid unit was drafted in to help control the mayhem, which reportedly started after a group of teens was asked to leave the food court at the Arndale shopping centre at about 2.30pm.
