Waterloo Road's Kym Marsh was brought to tears as she presented the incredible midwife Agnes Nisbett with an award at the Daily Mirror's Pride of Britain Awards this week. The annual event, which celebrated its 25th anniversary earlier this week, recognised the UK's fundraisers, awe-inspiring children, community heroes, young achievers and brave individuals with well-deserved awards. The ceremony took place at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on Monday, with a host of stars celebrating the achievements.

One of the winners, Agnes Nisbett, was named Community Hero for her years of dedication to grieving mothers. The 87-year-old experienced the heartbreak of stillbirth in 1973 when she was a young midwife and went on to provide a sanctuary for women who had experienced the same thing.

After losing her son John many years ago, Agnes returned to work determined to make a change, having no keepsakes of him. She initiated the Born Whilst Sleeping programme at Leicester Royal Infirmary and designated a room for women to grieve away from other mums and their newborns in the main maternity ward.

She also encouraged mothers to take photographs and palm prints as cherished keepsakes. The entire room was moved to tears by Agnes' story, with host Carol Vorderman announcing that 'two women grateful to you' would present her award.
