'King Charles will feel the Queen's absence acutely at Coronation,' says royal expert

For all the excitement and anticipation surrounding his coronation, King Charles will no doubt find the landmark day a bittersweet experience.

While on the one hand he’s likely to feel immense pride when he’s finally crowned King, experts believe there will inevitably be a part of him that is tinged with sadness as he remembers the monarch who preceded him – his beloved mother, Queen Elizabeth II. “He will feel her absence acutely, there’s no doubt about that,”former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond told OK! “The last time he saw the Imperial State Crown, which he will be wearing, it was lying on her coffin.

So the whole thing will bring back so many memories. It’ll be a very mixed bag of emotions for him.” Although it’s widely acknowledged – even by Charles himself – that mother and son didn’t share the closest bond when he was growing up, their relationship only grew stronger, warmer and more mutually supportive with age.

While the Queen provided a steadying influence during difficult times such as his tumultuous separation and subsequent divorce from Princess Diana, Charles in turn stepped up when Her Majesty became more frail with age, taking on an increasing number of high-profile engagements and flying the royal flag both at home and abroad. “As far back as 10 years ago, we saw a gradual process of the handing over of the office of monarch to Charles,” says royal commentator Duncan Larcombe. “In the last year of the Queen’s life, the then-prince was King in all but name.
