King Charles III is said to be scaling down his Coronation next year, amid the cost of living crisis. According to reports, the new monarch will be stripping back on the traditional service, cutting out the royal pomp and flair, making for quite the different ceremony to that of the Queen’s back in 1953.
In contrast to the three-hour Coronation which was held at Westminster Abbey, Charles’ ceremony is set to be shortened to 60 minutes, with the number of guests being modestly cut down from 8,000 to 2,000.The formal dress worn at the late Queen’s service 70 years ago, consisting of velvet coronation robes with white winter fur, is also being swapped out for more relaxed attire.
These reported changes to the upcoming Coronation are being made as a royal insider has said Charles is conscious of the public’s current struggles with the ramped-up cost of living.
A source recently told The Mirror: “The King is very aware of the struggles felt by modern Britons so will see his wishes carried through that. “Although his Coronation ceremony should stay right and true to the long-held traditions of the past, it should also be representative of a monarchy in a modern world. "The King has long been an advocate of a streamlined or slimmed down monarchy and this project could certainly be said to fit with his vision." In keeping with the scaling back, it’s been suggested that the traditional presentation of an ingot of gold to the monarch, which the Queen received during her Coronation, will also be scrapped.
