A senior Labour MSP has accused Keir Starmer of failing to provide “climate leadership” over the Rosebank oil field.Monica Lennon said the Labour leader must show “courage” by promising to tear up the contract if he becomes Prime Minister.Tory PM Rishi Sunak caused fury after his Government announced its support for the new North Sea field which contains up to 350 million barrels of oil.Fossil fuels are driving climate change and politicians including First Minister Humza Yousaf criticised the decision.Starmer has said a Labour Government would not support new licenses, but would respect existing contracts.This would mean Rosebank continuing if it was pushed through before the general election.Lennon, who held the Net Zero brief in Scottish Labour’s top team until last year, criticised Starmer in a speech to the SCAPE Scotland conference in Edinburgh.She described the Tory plan for Rosebank as “terrifying” and added:“My party rightly opposed Rosebank because it’s dangerous for the planet.

But saying that we won’t overturn its license should we enter government at the next election is not climate leadership.“Business wants and needs certainty, yes.

But making climate destruction more certain is a bad position.“Rosebank will undermine investment in the renewables transition and keep us locked into fossil fuel consumption for many decades.”She added: “And that’s bad for everyone, especially the millions of people across the UK living in fuel poverty.“So, to my own party leadership, I urge courage.”Starmer is expected in Scotland soon to campaign in the Rutherglen and Hamilton West by-election.Green MSP Mark Ruskell also called on Starmer to reverse Rosebank if he enters Downing Street:"Opposing a development right up until
