Kate Garraway says Derek 'can't have 24 hour care forever' as 'money will run out'
ok.co.ukGood Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway has opened up about caring for husband Derek Draper and her fears that she won’t be able to pay for his 24 hour care forever.
During an appearance alongside ITV colleagues Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield on This Morning, Kate, 54, spoke movingly about her recent documentary, Caring For Derek, and how their future looks.The mum of two, who has been providing Derek with round the clock care since he left hospital following his battle with Covid-19, admitted: “I don’t believe we can have 24 hour care forever, you know, there’s a point where money runs out.” Kate added: “It’s a big moment and I was thinking, “This isn’t sustainable.” And if there isn’t the structure there to help long-term, what are we actually going to do?” Get exclusive celebrity stories and fabulous photoshoots straight to your inbox with OK!'s daily newsletter However, Kate said her first documentary Finding Derek led to a world-renowned US doctor contacting her and presenting the family with a brand new option, as viewers witnessed in follow-up doc Caring For Derek.
She explained: “I’ve been doing a lot of research following the [first] documentary of wonderful people who had contacted me.” Kate then went on to recall how the American doctor, who works at a specialist clinic in Monterrey, Mexico, got in touch with her after finding out about Derek and offered the chance “to be a test case”.
Kate went on to say: “He can sustain sitting in a wheelchair for about twenty minutes, before he flags, so the thought of going 5000 miles seemed properly bonkers.
