Kate Garraway is in a "bubble of her own numbness of grief" after the death of her husband, Derek Draper. The Good Morning Britain star announced Derek's death on Friday, 5 January, revealing that she and their children, daughter Darcey, 17, and son William, 14, were there with him in his final moments.
Before his passing, Derek, 56, was critically ill after suffering a heart attack over the festive period, brought on after he suffered with severe complications from Covid-19 for the past four years.
As Kate's pal and colleague Ben Shephard returned to presenting Good Morning Britain, he addressed Derek's death and said that he had spoken to Kate on the phone, as he updated audiences with how she's doing.
He said: "It is the first time I have been on since sadly we heard of Derek's passing last Friday. I just thought it would be alright to, firstly, on Kate's behalf, I spoke to Kate last night. "She again reiterated what she said on Monday which is a huge, huge thank you to everybody who sent her and her family a message.
