US President Joe Biden has shockingly withdrawn from his bid for re-election, with the possibility of Vice President Kamala Harris stepping into his shoes.
Biden, 81, has already endorsed and offered his "full support" for Harris, 59, to be the Democrat nominee. On Sunday, 21 July, just four months before polls open for American citizens to vote, it was announced that Biden, the current US President, will end his candidacy for re-election.
Biden will remain president until the winner of the 2024 election takes office in January. In a post on his social media account, Biden said: "My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term." He went on to share his endorsement for his Vice President and added: "My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President.
And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. "Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year.
