Joe Biden steps down from US election campaign against Donald Trump

US President Joe Biden has stepped down from his 2024 bid for presidency. Biden, leader of the Democratic Party, announced an end to his re-election campaign on Sunday.It comes after a disastrous debate sparked doubts over the 81-year-old being fit enough for the role, which would entail four more years on the job.

Pressure has been mounting on Mr Biden to step aside amid concerns over his health. A debate performance with his opponent, Donald Trump, led to Democrats demanding he reconsider his reelection bid.

In a statement posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, he said: "And while it has been my intention to seek re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling the duties as President for the remainder of my term”.Mr Biden said he would address the nation on the matter next week.

Minutes after the move, Mr Biden went on to announce his support for Kamala Harris as the next Democrat nominee.He said: "Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year.
