Everton No.1 Jordan Pickford remains Southgate’s first choice ahead of the tournament in Germany. But with Aaron Ramsdale warming the bench at Arsenal, Nick Pope out injured at Newcastle and Crystal Palace keeper Sam Johnstone also playing second fiddle at Selhurst Park, Butland could be on the brink of a sensational return at the age of 30.
Asked about the predicament he is facing in finding a capable understudy for Pickford, Southgate nodded: “Exactly so, it is an issue and it is up in the air. “I can’t deny that so again we have to make sure we’re watching everybody.
