Roisin Gallagher is back as recovering alcoholic Shiv in Irish comedy-drama The Dry, with its second series following the Dublinite as she tries to stay on the wagon and survive living with her chaotic family. The ITVX show reunites its stellar cast, including Ciaran Hinds, Siobhan Cullen and Pom Boyd, to play the dysfunctional Sheridan family and while it was a joy to return to set, Roisin admits that she had a crisis of confidence ahead of filming. “I was absolutely delighted it was going again and I did that thing that actors do where we hear we’ve got a job and we’re so delighted for five minutes - and then start panicking,” she laughs. “There was a bit of like, ‘Is it going to be as good?

Am I going to remember [Shiv]? Will I get the voice right again?’ But going back to something that’s already established was a really lovely experience for me.” Series two picks up seven months on from the last time we saw Shiv - who drunkenly crashed her sister Caroline’s engagement party and delivered a mortifying speech half-naked to a crowd of her extended family in the finale.

But the Sheridans have come a long way since we left them, with Shiv proudly sober, celibate and solvent, Caroline newly single after finishing with her fiancee and their brother Ant holding onto a boyfriend. “She’s got her stuff together a bit and she’s found her feet,” Roisin says. “She’s on the wagon, she is in a job and she’s sort of just navigating this newfound sober life in the best way that she can while still living at home with all the other Sheridans.” Shiv’s fresh stability is soon threatened when she meets charming barista Alex, played by Kin’s Sam Keeley.
