A group of Manchester United fans who protested against Mason Greenwood's potential return have welcomed the announcement he is to leave the club, but they have vowed to hold decision-makers at Old Trafford to account for their handling of the process.

The supporter group, named 'Female Fans Against Greenwood's Return', protested before the opening game of the season against Wolves last week and they urged the club not to bring Greenwood back into the playing squad.

It was understood that Greenwood's return was set to be announced by club CEO Richard Arnold to staff, but news of his potential return leaked and there was a backlash from fans, which prompted a U-turn. A member of the protest group, speaking anonymously to the Manchester Evening News, was asked for their reaction to the decision and they said: "My first reaction is 'finally' - although I think it’s the right thing for the wrong reasons. "They've finally come to the right conclusion but they’ve reached it after it was suggested they were planning to make the complete opposite decision.
