Is Manchester Airport haunted - or are the only spirits to be found there in duty free? Ten years ago, the M.E.N. uncovered archive documents, dating back to the 1970s, which revealed how a string of staff had reported ghostly encounters at the airport.
The sightings were said to have concentrated on the area around the Terminal Three departure gates - which officially opened in 1989.
The most common account was of a ghostly male figure, dressed as an airman, wandering around the gates before disappearing. Meanwhile, one worker claimed to have seen a person wearing a pilot’s hat walking into the toilets at night before hearing a door shut.
No flights were due to arrive or depart at the time and, when the staff member went to investigate, there was nobody in the toilets - and the motion-sensitive lights had not been activated.
