Sam Heughan shot to fame over ten years ago following his break out role as Jamie Fraser in Outlander. The Scottish actor, 43, shot to fame as the Highland warrior Jamie in the on-screen adaptation of Diana Gabaldon's novels alongside Caitriona Balfe as his on-screen wife Claire Fraser.Following the worldwide success of the show, Sam has created his own Sassenach whisky line, co-wrote two bestselling novels alongside co-star Graham McTavish as well as his own glistening acting career.Outlander's seventh season is currently on a break until 2024, so to ease the pain of Droughtlander les take a trip down memory lane and look at the life of Sam before he joined up with the show that changed everything....Prior to Outlander, Sam started his career with small roles on River City, Midsomer Murders, and Doctors.

But in his memoir, 'Waypoints', the 42-year-old revealed that he auditioned for various TV and film roles in LA. He returned to the UK with no money before landing the life-changing role.

He wrote: "I was 34 and forced to sign on to pay my rent. Two weeks later, I couldn’t face the process – the Job Centre not seeing acting as a legitimate profession – so I gave up and tried to find full-time work as a barman.“I had done a variety of jobs to support myself over the years – delivered sandwiches by bicycle, sold perfume in Harrods, drawn up contracts for mental health doctors in the NHS and various other bar and restaurant jobs around London."Sam also recalled the moment he realised Richard Madden didn't remember him during an event he was serving drinks at.

At the time of their encounter, Madden had started his role in Game of Thrones and was one of the guests in attendance at the event at London's V&A Museum.
