Football's lawmakers have started talks over how to improve VAR amid mounting criticism and controversy surrounding the tech.It was brought in down south at Premier League level during the 19/20 season and in the Premiership last term, but it has failed to stem refereeing debate.

Instead it has magnified it and a host of managers have hit out and called for change - recent examples including Arsenal's Mikel Arteta and Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers.According to The Telegraph, The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has "begun a series of consultations over what changes should be made ahead of their first serious review of VAR since its introduction." It is claimed the game "still faces another year of VAR chaos" with trials of proposed amendments likely before they are implemented.

There is "growing confidence" though in the Premier League that the introduction of semi-automatic offside can be brought into the EPL ahead of next season.Consultations have started and while talks so far have been kept to a small group including representatives of UEFA and other continental confederations, the likes of the Premier League will join in the coming weeks.

Formal recommendations would be made to IFAB themselves.Any proposed changed are highly unlikely to be brought into play for net season as historically, trials have been carried out before being implemented permanently.
