A Greater Manchester politician has said Avanti West Coast would 'still not make a profit' if it was given 'a local pub with a 24-hour licence, free beer and free food'.
Liberal Democrat Lord Goddard of Stockport slammed Avanti for 'incompetent management' after it emerged how the mainline rail firm could not be stripped of its contract despite its 'lamentable' performance because of the terms agreed by the previous Tory government.
Labour frontbencher Lord Hendy of Richmond Hill told Parliament he is due to meet with the boss of Avanti West Coast this Friday (January 31) to discuss the operator’s poor level of services, which have 'not been good enough'.
But despite scrutinising the three-year deal awarded to the company back in 2023 under the Conservatives, he said it has 'not yet failed to meet the performance target standards that the previous government set it'.
