I tried Poundland’s new Chris the Caterpillar cake - and I have a message for Colin and Cuthbert

When it comes to supermarket sweet treats, the caterpillar cake is one of the favourite among Brits. Colin the Caterpillar from Marks and Spencer has been a popular choice for many children’s parties - and some adults too - for three decades.

Making his first appearance in 1990, Colin has put a smile on people’s faces with his cheeky chocolatey grin. Over the years, other supermarkets have tried to replicate his success from Morrisons to Sainsbury's.

Now the latest cake to arrive on the scene is Poundland’s Chris the Caterpillar cake. It comes after Aldi caused a storm with its Cuthbert version recently. There was so much controversy that M&S decided to take legal action against Aldi, claiming it was too similar to Colin.
