With fish being halal I always presumed that sushi would be okay to eat as a Muslim. However, many years ago I learned that a common ingredient used for the Japanese delicacy was mirin.
Mirin,or rice wine is a type of rice wine that is similar to sake, is commonly used in Japanese food and contains low levels of alcohol - making it haram.
This meant that I very rarely ventured into the culinary world of Japanese food, let alone sushi. However, this has recently changed thanks to the takeaway sushi spot on Oxford Road.
