In 1985, ITV was the dominant force in soap operas, with Coronation Street (then nearly a quarter of a century old) and Emmerdale drawing in large audiences every evening.
Even the often-criticised tea time drama Crossroads managed to attract up to 15 million viewers. The BBC decided it was time to compete, announcing plans for its own prime-time soap opera - EastEnders.
Unlike ITV's predominantly cosy dramas set 'up north', this new show would focus on the lives of working-class residents in the fictional borough of Walford in London's East End, promising a grittier tone from the outset.
After much anticipation, the first episode of EastEnders, created by Julia Smith and Tony Holland, aired on February 19, 1985.
