In a twist of fate mirroring TV star Davina McCall's health scare, Mike Wild, 38, mistook his brain tumour for altitude sickness while scaling a volcano. The Manchester-based learning and development specialist suffered a migraine during his Ecuador holiday climb, initially dismissing it as a reaction to the high altitude.
However, the pain escalated, leading to an emergency hospital visit where MRI and CT scans revealed a colloid cyst, a benign tumour typically located at the brain's centre.
Back in the UK, Salford Royal Hospital took over his care, but due to the tumour's tricky position, surgery was off the table.
Instead, Mike undergoes regular scans every 18 months to keep an eye on the growth. Despite the daunting diagnosis, he refuses to let it dominate his life, although he admits it casts a "living with a constant shadow".
