Cases of the winter vomiting bug are higher than average for this time of year, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) warns, with Brits urged to stay at home for 48 hours if they notice any of three specific symptoms.
The latest UKHSA data shows norovirus cases are more than double the five-season average for the same time last year, which is a benchmark used by the agency that looks at illness rates over the past five seasons to work out seasonal trends.
The number of norovirus outbreaks reported to the Hospital Norovirus Outbreak Reporting System (HNORS) since the start of the winter season is 15.8 per cent higher than the five-season average, the data shows.
Last month, NHS bosses warned the "quad-demic" of flu, COVID-19, norovirus and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) was putting immense pressure on services.
