In these uncertain times, growing your own veg is more appealing than ever. The idea of picking ripe, juicy tomatoes or fresh salad leaves from your back garden is certainly more inviting than the long queues and empty shelves that await us at supermarkets.
Not only is the taste of home-grown produce superior to shop-bought, it’s much cheaper and better for the environment too. But where on earth do you start if you’ve never grown veg before?
And what if you don’t have a plot of soil ready to be sown? Kath Gavin, sustainability co-ordinator at Hulme Community Garden Centre, is a grow-your-own enthusiast. "There are so many reasons to have go: for the health benefits, for the environment, for minimising food miles and packaging," says Kath.
