The latest figures from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) show that the clearance time for people challenging their Personal Independence Payment (PIP) award decision is now 39 working days.
The Department said this was down to improvements in “processes and increasing decision-making capacity”. The latest data show that during the 2023/24 financial year, some 60,000 people successfully challenged the DWP over its initial PIP award decision.
Of that total, some 25,600 claimants had their decision reversed after an appeal was lodged through the Mandatory Reconsideration (MR) process, but before it was heard at a tribunal hearing, while 34,400 claimants had their decision reversed after a tribunal hearing.
It's important to be aware that the number of people claiming PIP has now hit a record-breaking high of more than 3.6 million and as a result, new claims are being prioritised over award reviews for existing claimants - but this will not impact the MR process.
