In front of her lay the emaciated bodies of thousands of Jewish and Polish victims of the holocaust – and she could not find the words to express her tortured thoughts.
Jane was just 19 when she found herself at Bergen-Belsen after the 11th Armoured Brigade freed the camp from ruthless SS clutches in 1945.
She was on tour with a British concert party entertaining troops in the aftermath of the war. And if the grisly sight of thousands of unburied skeletal corpses and 60,000 barely living survivors was not enough – Jane, who had Jewish heritage, later found 219 of her own extended family died in the holocaust.
