An urgent call to action has been issued for some 3.4 million people who have just over a week to submit their tax returns or else they might face penalties.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) warns that failing to meet the January 31 deadline will trigger an immediate £100 penalty. To date, some 8.6 million individuals have already completed their 2023/24 tax returns.

Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC's director general for customer services, has urged: "Time is running out for the millions still to file their self-assessment tax return by January 31.

Help and support is available for those who have not yet started their return. Visit gov.uk and search 'self-assessment' to find out more." It is important for taxpayers to include their bank details within the tax return so any repayments can be processed swiftly and securely, according to HMRC.
