SPFL admitted they might not run a second string competition next season. Accies were declared champions on a points per game basis in a similar way to how the senior leagues were called, with Livingston also being crowned winners of reserve league's second tier.
But SPFL chief Neil Doncaster has revealed it will be up to the clubs to decide whether they want to play reserve football next season, and if there isn't enough appetite it will be scrapped for the 2020/21 campaign.
With many clubs releasing a lot of their out of contract players, the focus is on getting squads together to compete in the senior divisions and this could be a blow to younger players looking for deals.
