Hamilton Accies chairman explains Andy Ryan exit as he eyes players to plug void left by star striker

Hamilton chairman Allan Maitland has revealed Accies had no option but to let star striker Andy Ryan leave the club – but hopes his departure and the prize money from their shock Scottish Cup win over Ross County will bring in two new players.Ryan was Hamilton’s top goalscorer this season but left Lanarkshire for Larne on Monday to pursue the next chapter of his career in the Northern Ireland Premiership.It is a huge blow to the club and a sore one for supporters to stomach amid the club’s relegation battle at the bottom of the Scottish Championship.But Maitland insists Ryan was already due to join Larne in the summer and cashing in on him now was the right call for all involved.He said: “Andy wanted to go, it’s as simple as that.“Andy’s contract was due to expire in the summer and he was going to sign a pre-contract with Larne anyway, so that meant I would have had a player at the club for the last four months of his contract who didn’t want to be here.“Andy has got the possibility of European football going out to Larne and with [ex-Accie] Shaun Want out there already, there were lots of plus points for him to make the move.“We had no desire for Andy to leave but it was the right thing to do and we didn’t have any choice in the matter anyway.“There is no point keeping somebody who doesn’t want to be here.“We are going to be involved in a relegation dogfight and we will need everybody bang at it, all the time.“The last few games we have shown that and we need to continue to show it.”Ryan’s final act as an Accies player was hitting the decisive penalty that earned them a 5-3 shootout win over Ross County, which landed a last 16 tie at home to Hearts on the weekend of February 11/12.Maitland acted quickly to bring in
