Grangemouth closure 'part of China fuel plan', warns union chief

BRITAIN’S most powerful union boss has warned the Grangemouth refinery closure could be part of a Chinese plan to sell jet fuel to the UK.

About 400 workers at the site were sent redundancy letters earlier this month with job losses to be spread over the next 18 months.

The refinery is Scotland’s only one, but owner Petroineos – a joint venture between Chinese state owned PetroChina and billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos – intends to turn it into an import terminal instead.

It will mean rather than refining North Sea crude domestically it is instead shipped to third countries and then bought back into the UK.
