The hotel quarantine scheme to keep out new Covid variants was in chaos last night after its online booking system crashed just minutes after launching.
Even after the initial technical blip was resolved passengers were unable to book hotels near Heathrow, Birmingham and Glasgow airports for several hours.
A second booking website was still displaying a site maintenance message, promising: “We’ll be back soon!” Officials insisted international arrivals would be able to book rooms – at up to £1750 for 10 days – in time for Monday, when hotel quarantine and testing for arrivals from 33 red list countries will start, enforced by steep fines.
