Emily Longeretta Move over Meredith Grey, and hello Kristine Barnett. Ellen Pompeo, best known for her leading role in “Grey’s Anatomy,” on which she has starred since 2005, leads Hulu’s new limited series, “Good American Family.” The trailer below begins by explaining that the series, produced by 20th Television, is “inspired by multiple stories, perspectives, threats, interpretations [and] accusations.” While the official description does not mention it, the show is inspired by Natalia Grace, a young girl with a rare form of dwarfism, who was adopted in 2010 by Kristine and Michael Barnett.
Per Hulu’s official logline, “Good American Family” will be “told from multiple points of view, as a means to explore issues of perspective, bias, and trauma.” “As they begin to raise her alongside their three biological children, mystery emerges around her age and background, and they slowly start to suspect she may not be who she says she is,” the description continues. “As they defend their family from the daughter they’ve grown to believe is a threat, she fights her own battle to confront her past and what her future holds, in a showdown that ultimately plays out in the tabloids and the courtroom.” Natalia Grace’s story has made headlines since 2010, as the Barnett family abandoned her in an apartment alone, claiming she was lying about her age and alleged that she had tried to kill Kristine.
While Natalia went on to live with two different families in the years that followed, the Barnetts were charged with neglect of a dependent but the charges were later dismissed.
The case was recently explored and investigated in three seasons of ID’s “The Curious Case of Natalia Grace,” which included interviews with Natalia and her.
