Good Morning Britain viewers couldn’t contain their emotions as Kate Garraway paused the live broadcast to announce devastating “breaking” news.
During Thursday’s (January 30) episode of the ITV hit breakfast show, Kate and co-star Richard Madeley took on hosting duties, but things took a heart-breaking turn as they revealed that a plane had crashed into a helicopter just above Washington DC before they both dropped into the Potomac River.
Announcing the news with viewers, Kate explained: "This is what you are waking up to this morning, some breaking news that happened in the last few hours.
An American Airlines passenger jet has crashed into a US Army Black Hawk helicopter. “The jet was reportedly carrying 60 passengers and 4 crew members, while three US Army soldiers were on board the helicopter.” Richard continued: “This mid-air collision happened near Washington Ronald reagan airport and a massive search and rescue operation is currently on the way into the river and it has now been reported that 18 bodies have been recovered from the crash, mostly from that river and no survivors have been found so far.” Live images were then shown from the scene in Washington DC, then it was cut to North America correspondent Noel Phillips, who was on hand to bring viewers more updates live from New York City.
