Girl power shines through as Durie's ABC take on challenges

Durie’s Amateur Boxing Club had five fighters in action in two separate away shows, with girl power shining through for the local outfit.Both events were held at the Alona Hotel at M&D’s in Strathclyde Park and there were mixed results for the club’s young stars.Doonhamers ABC coach Anne Armstrong held an all-girl show at the Alona Hotel to showcase Scottish female boxing talent, which was attended by VIP guest Hannah Rankin, former WBA and IBO world champion.Durie’s ABC had three girls fighting, two of whom were in action against each other in an exhibition match between Kayla Durie, 12, and 13-year-old Ava Short.Club coach Jamie Durie was in sister Kayla’s corner, while fellow Durie’s coach Abie Tweedlie was in niece Ava’s corner.And it was a big occasion as both boxers enjoyed their first match in front of a packed audience.Last in for Durie’s was Castlemilk’s Kaylah Lynch, 13, who picked up an unanimous points win over Newcastle’s Robyn Pearce.Blairbeth boxer Lynch and Doonhamers’ Blossom Weir were voted best home and away boxers on the night.Before that, a show was held by Cambuslang club O’Neil’s ABC, with two boxers and as many coaches in action.Jamie Durie was first up in a 63kg fight against Bongani Hapazari, with the O’Neil’s fighter taking the win by unanimous decision.East end man Nathan Rodden took on Adam Patton in a 71kg fight, in the closest bout of the night, but the O’Neil’s boxer again took the win, with no complaints from visiting head coach Archie Durie.Reflecting on the displays, Archie said: “Kaylah Lynch against Robyn Pearce was a cracking bout, with Kaylah showing off her skills, boxing really clever, against a game opponent.“Kaylah showed how good a boxer she is, and I was talking to Hannah
