A giant state-of-the-art glasshouse the size of two football pitches which will grow up to 19million trees a year has been hailed as a “key” eco milestone.Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS), which owns the incredible new building in Elgin, Moray, said it would allow it to double its tree production capacity, helping to restore woods and plant new forests.

The glasshouse - an enormous 12,000m2 - includes technology which would enable the planting of an astonishing 1million tree seedlings a day. It’s part of a multi-million pound effort to redevelop and modernise FLS’ Newton Nursery site near Elgin in the north-east.

Ultimately, it will be capable of growing up to 19 million trees per year under its roof. The stock produced within the glasshouse will be mostly conifer species such as lodgepole pine, Scots pine, Sitka and Norway spruce - the backbone of Scotland’s £1billion forestry industry.

FLS got the keys today after contractors Morgan Sindall Construction completed building the glasshouse. Initial nursery operations will commence during 2025 with the site being fully operational by the end of the year.
