Ghost village two hours from Manchester has dark secret which still baffles historians

Wharram Percy was once home to a thriving community for about 500 years, its stone church standing proudly at the centre. However, today it exists only as a "ghost village", with nothing but the ruins of that medieval church and the surrounding fields.

It's been described as a place hiding a "secret so grisly you'll scarcely be able to believe it". In 15th century Yorkshire, wool was as valuable as money.

During this period, Wharram Percy saw its population dwindle; previously, the village had been bustling with peasant farmers since at least the 10th century, nestled in rural Yorkshire between York and Scarborough, reports the Express.

But the meagre rents paid by these tenant farmers were nothing compared to the lucrative earnings from wool. So by around 1500 local baron William Hylton had evicted his last tenants, though a few smallholders and shepherds stayed behind.
